Nairobi, 28 September 2026: KeNIC has launched the MyKE App, a mobile platform that makes it simpler for Kenyans at home and abroad to find, claim and connect their digital identity. Built from a student hackathon idea into a market-ready product, the app is 100% developed in Kenya by Kenyans.
From challenge to product
The app grew out of Hack-A-Milli, a national app-development challenge for university students. It drew more than 480 participants, individually and in teams of up to four, and produced 50 prototypes. The winning concept came from 22-year-old Daniel Makala of Kabianga University. It was then developed and refined into the MyKE App.
“We knew that the best way to build for young Kenyans was to work with young Kenyans,” said Gitau Muraguri, Marketing and Communications Manager, KeNIC. “We threw the Hack-A-Milli challenge to university students across the country, and we were thoroughly impressed. We are now really proud of what was built.”
One app instead of many stops
“Before the .KE App, companies, businesses and people used to visit various hosting companies to search for domains and select the packages they wanted,” said Makala. “Now the app consolidates the entire search and interface into one point.”
What users can do
- Search for .KE domains, manually or with AI assistance that suggests brandable names.
- Register through a KeNIC-listed registrar, straight from a phone.
- Stay informed with the .KE News portal, a single feed of events, internships, careers, tenders and other opportunities from KeNIC and its partners.
- Preserve family history with Album.KE, a platform from Host Africa, integrated at launch, that lets families store memories and family trees and share them with relatives worldwide.
“The MyKE App will be like a mall, where you walk in and explore many different opportunities on the digital platform,” said Andrew Mwanyota Lewela, KeNIC CEO. “Kenyans at all levels can search for the availability of a domain name of their liking and seamlessly register for that digital identity.”
Why a .KE identity matters
“Your website address should say where you belong and where you are going,” said Gitau Muragur, Marketing and Communication Manager. “.KE gives you global visibility, and it builds trust, because visitors can immediately tell that a site is truly Kenyan.”
An opportunity for the diaspora
The app lets Kenyans abroad secure domains built around their names and heritage, such as mwangi.ke, otieno.ke, sokoni.ke or nyumbani.ke. A domain is unique, and once a name is registered nobody else can have it. A thematic campaign targeting diaspora communities launches alongside the app.
Growing the .KE namespace
.KE recorded about 16% year-to-date growth by mid-year, roughly four times the global average for ccTLDs. KeNIC is targeting about 159,000 domains by the end of 2026 and one million by 2030.
“The future we see for the MyKE App is one where every household in Kenya is part of a truly digitally inclusive country,” added Andrew Mwanyota Lewela, KeNIC CEO.
How to get it
The MyKE App is available now on Android. Search for “MyKE App” on Google Play. The iOS version is expected in the coming weeks, with more features and upgrades to follow.
